Sterilization"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-container-3 wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"wp-container-1 wp-block-column\">\n<h2>Sterilization<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Critical items are medical equipment, instruments or devices that have direct contact with internal sterile body tissues or fluids and must be sterilized (free of bacteria or any living microorganism).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Some examples of critical items include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>surgical instruments<\/li><li>Surgical implants<\/li><li>endoscopes that enter sterile spaces<\/li><li>biopsy forceps and brushes<\/li><li>eye equipment<\/li><li>dental equipment and instruments<\/li><\/ol>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-container-2 wp-block-column\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"797\" src=\"https:\/\/perioperative1002.slc-courses.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/word-image-77-18.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-93\" srcset=\"https:\/\/perioperative1002.slc-courses.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/word-image-77-18.jpeg 1200w, https:\/\/perioperative1002.slc-courses.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/word-image-77-18-300x199.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/perioperative1002.slc-courses.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/word-image-77-18-1024x680.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/perioperative1002.slc-courses.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/word-image-77-18-768x510.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h5>Sterilization of non-heat tolerant items<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Some critical items may not be heat tolerant so must be sterilized in different ways using low-temperature methods and chemicals for sterilization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Some examples of chemical sterilant include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>hydrogen peroxide gas plasma<\/li><li>vaporized hydrogen peroxide<\/li><li>ozone<\/li><li>hydrogen peroxide\/ozone combinations<\/li><li>liquid peracetic acid<\/li><li>100% ethylene oxide<\/li><li>6% hydrogen peroxide<\/li><li>2% glutaraldehyde (&gt; 10 hours)<\/li><li>2% enhanced action formulation hydrogen peroxide (6 hours)<\/li><li>7% enhanced action formulation hydrogen peroxide (20 minutes)<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>(PIDAC, 2013).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><strong>Reprocessing Decision Chart<\/strong><\/p><p>Review the PIDAC (2013). Perioperative nurses must be familiar with, and constantly vigilant about, maintaining these conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><strong>Storage and Use of Reprocessed Medical Equipment\/Devices<\/strong><\/p><p>Read PIDAC (2013). These products can kill all microorganisms except for high numbers of bacterial spores. Some examples include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Glutaraldehyde solutions<\/li><li>Ortho-phthalaldehyde<\/li><li>Peracetic acid solutions<\/li><li>And other disinfectants such as alcohol, chlorine compounds, hydrogen peroxide, iodine and iodophors, phenolics, and quaternary ammonium compounds<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>(King &amp; Spry, 2019)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h5>High-Level Disinfection: Ensuring Effectiveness<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>High-level disinfectants need to be tested to ensure their minimum effectiveness before each use.
